Today, we are introducing Artist Themes for Google Chrome. We invited leading artists, architects, musicians, illustrators, filmmakers and fashion and interior designers from across the globe to create artwork for an unusual canvas: the modern web browser. The result is a vibrant fusion of art and technology, with a hundred Artist Themes that we hope will add a touch of inspiration and delight to your web browsing experience with Google Chrome.

One of our favorite themes comes from Yulia Brodskaya, whose innovative paper art techniques and passion for typography and illustration have brought her into the international spotlight. We were particularly intrigued by Yulia’s approach to the design challenge at hand, explained in her own words:

I was really curious to see how the traditional paper craft, which I use for creating my work, can be applied to the Google Chrome browser. I made a quick pencil sketch first, choosing the two main elements for my theme: green jungle leaves for the top and a very colourful parrot to accompany it. Then I followed my usual working pattern and created a physical artwork out of edge glued paper stripes. I used the photographs of the paper leaves and parrot to design my theme layout, and sent the resulting mock-up to Google designers who brought the whole thing to life.

We’re honored to have the opportunity to work with a hundred artists around the world, including Jeff Koons, Jenny Holzer, Karim Rashid, Jonathan Adler, Oscar de la Renta, Anita Kunz, Tom Sachs, Kate Spade, Donna Karan, Kid Robot, Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Graves, Todd Oldham, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Mariah Carey, and Wes Craven (and that’s just to name a few!). Many, many thanks to all the artists for lending their vision, imagination, and hard work to this collaboration.

If you’re using the new Chrome developer release, there are two sample themes available, Camo and Snowflake. To activate them, click the link then agree to save the CRX file. Chrome will then switch themes and give you a yellow alert it did so.

Google is working on making this easier. In the tools menu, clicking “Options” and then “Personal Stuff,” there’s a “Themes” section with a “Get Themes” button. So far the Web site it links to is empty, but presumably it will be populated with some themes soon enough.

The themes also work on Mac OS X, though the options dialog box has a tantalizing color picker that I couldn’t get to do anything.

The new version also adds support for the HTML 5 video tag, Google said. That feature is a centerpiece of browser makers’ efforts to propagate “open Web” standards that permit richer Web sites and Web applications that don’t rely on plug-ins such as Adobe Flash.

How to use this Chrome Theme Editor:
1. Unzip the downloaded zip file that contains .png files but must be in separate different directories, these files can be edit and build to edit using the tool.
2. After building you can now test it and it will auto save into default.dll file but make sure that your theme’s path is correct. Sudden changes might result to error but its ok.
3. Now try to do the Build & Test button, this will make both action in one button.place default.dll in Chrome’s path and after that Launch it.

How to install google chrome theme?

Just follow the following steps to install google chrome themes.

Google Chrome claimed that their browser is the fastest on the internet.
They uses innovative technologies to improve the user’s browsing experiance and Chrome has a minimal design which reduces computer’s CPU and Memory usage.

Unlike most other browsers Chrome uses the low amount of computer resources.
Also it’s easy to manipulate with it’s advanced features.

Installing a theme isn’t a smooth process: you download a .crx file, then Google Chrome loads theme and offers the option to go back to the default theme. You can’t preview themes before installing theme and there’s no interface for managing themes. The only way to uninstall themes, extensions and to reload themes is by typing chrome://extensions/ in the address bar.

(Update: Alexandro Jimenez says that chrome://extensions/ is buggy and a Chrome developer mentions that “you’re not meant to use chrome://extensions/ to manage themes”. I’ll continue to use it until Chrome adds a theme manager.)

For now, the gallery only includes themes created by Google, but you’ll be able to create your own theme and upload it to the gallery in the near future. Check how you can create a theme for Google Chrome.

Bonus themes. There are two sample themes that aren’t included in the gallery: Camo and Snowflakes, one of the best Chrome themes.

Just a few weeks ago, Google announced its plans to create an operating system based on Chrome. Considering that the browser itself is barely a year old, such plans may be premature. Then again, maybe not. But for right now, I’ll keep looking for ways to make the Chrome browser more useful.

Last June, I described ways to change Chrome’s default settings. Here’s a look at ways to revamp the browser’s interface and access some of its useful hidden features.

Themes perk up Chrome’s drab interface
Google is famous for its no-frills look, which describes the default Chrome interface as well. You can spiff the browser up a bit by adding one of the 30-or-so themes available for the version 3 beta.

To add a theme, click the options button in the top-right corner (the wrench icon) and choose Options. Under the Personal Stuff tab, click Get themes, or just browse to the Themes Gallery.

If you get tired of a theme, either select a new one or reopen the Personal Stuff tab in the Options dialog and choose Reset to default theme.

Make the most of Chrome’s context-menu options
At first glance, Chrome lacks some of Firefox’s most useful options. For example, Firefox lets you view your recently visited pages by clicking the down arrow next to the Back and Forward buttons. You can get the same information in Chrome by right-clicking either button to see a list of the sites you’ve been to most recently.

Another handy right-click option is to copy a URL and then right-click in the address bar and choose Paste and go. You can also open a link in a new incognito window by right-clicking it and selecting Open link in a new incognito window. And like Firefox’s Undo Closed Tab right-click option, if you inadvertently close a tab, just right-click another tab and choose Reopen closed tab. (You can do the same by pressing Ctrl-Shift-T.)

Useful Chrome keyboard shortcuts
I’m a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, and Chrome’s got several handy ones (note that some of these shortcuts also work in Firefox and other browsers):

• Shift-Escape opens Chrome’s Task Manager, where you can view the amount of memory and CPU cycles used by each open tab.
• Ctrl-Shift-N opens a new incognito window.
• Ctrl-B toggles the bookmarks bar off and on.
• Ctrl-Shift-B opens the Bookmark Manager.
• Shift-Alt-T moves the focus to the toolbar. Switch buttons by using the left and right arrow keys.
• Alt-Home opens your home page.
• Alt-F4 closes the current window.

Google on Tuesday launched a gallery of 29 themes for Google Chrome (requires Google Chrome 3.0 beta for Windows). But Mozilla, while refraining from sniggering, boasted it’s now up to 20,000.

Cosmetic changes are, well, cosmetic, but a lot of people like them as a way to add some flair to their machines. Many had been pestering Google to add themes support even though Chrome employs a Spartan user interface without much acreage for artistry. Last week’s developer version of Chrome added a “Get themes” button in the Options dialog box, and now Google has flipped the switch to activate the Web page that button points to.

The collection of themes includes Legal Pad, Star Gazing, Transparent (it’s not, on my Windows XP machine), Dots, and Pencil Sketch. One monochromatic theme called Minimal downloads nearly instantly, but Grass, at 1.3MB, takes more time.

Why so large? Themes can come with a background image that shows on Chrome’s new-tab page that offers a much greater chance for expressiveness, especially since that page is the default when Chrome launches. That could help Google with its attempt to recruit artists to supply their own themes, as some have done with the iGoogle customizable home page.

Mozilla has its own skinning technology in the works, a plug-in called Personas that launched on Mozilla Labs in March. That head start, coupled with its vastly larger and more engaged external audience, gives it a big lead over Chrome when it comes to getting gussied up.

Mozilla Labs announced Monday that Firefox now has 20,000 Personas, with 10,000 of them arriving in the last 10 weeks.
